Guide to setting up a Dynamic DNS (DDNS)

Configurare noua (How To)

Situatie

Dynamic DNS (DDNS) allows you to assign a persistent domain name to a device with a changing public IP address. This is useful for remotely accessing home servers, security cameras, or game servers without needing to track IP changes manually.

Solutie

1. Understand How DDNS Work

Most ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses, meaning they change over time. A DDNS service updates your domain name whenever your IP address changes, ensuring consistent remote access.

2. Choose a DDNS Provider

Popular free and paid DDNS providers include:

  • No-IP
  • DynDNS
    DuckDNS
  • Afraid.org
  • Google Domains DDNS

Sign up for an account with your chosen provider.

3. Register a Hostname

After creating an account:

  1. Log in to the DDNS provider’s website.
  2. Add a new hostname (e.g., myhomeserver.ddns.net).
  3. Select your update method (automatic or manual).
  4. Assign the hostname to your public IP address (you can find this at https://whatismyipaddress.com/).

4. Configure Your Router (Preferred Method)

Many modern routers support built-in DDNS updating.

  1. Access your router settings

    • Open a browser and enter your router’s IP (e.g., 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
    • Log in with your admin credentials.
  2. Find the DDNS settings

    • This is usually under WAN, Network, or Dynamic DNS settings.
  3. Enter your DDNS provider details

    • Choose your provider from the list.
    • Enter your hostname, username, and password.
    • Save and apply settings.

The router will now automatically update your DDNS provider whenever your IP changes.
