Step 1: Unbox and Set Up the Synology NAS

  1. Unbox the NAS: Remove the NAS and all its components (including power cable, Ethernet cable, etc.).
  2. Install Hard Drives (if not pre-installed):
    • Open the NAS casing and insert the hard drives into the drive bays. Depending on your model, this may involve screwing in the drives or sliding them into a tray.
    • Make sure the drives are securely connected.
  3. Connect the NAS to Power and Network:
    • Plug in the power cable to the NAS and to a power outlet.
    • Use an Ethernet cable to connect the NAS to your router or network switch.

Step 2: Power Up the NAS

  1. Turn on the Synology NAS using the power button (usually located at the front or back).
  2. Wait for the NAS to initialize; this may take a few minutes.

Step 3: Access the NAS via Web Browser

  1. Find the NAS IP Address:
    • The NAS will get an IP address automatically from your router (usually via DHCP). You can find the IP by logging into your router’s admin page or by using the Synology Assistant (software available from Synology’s website).
    • Alternatively, use the Synology Assistant tool to scan for the NAS on your network.
  2. Open Web Browser:
    • Open a web browser
    • In the address bar, type in the IP address of the NAS.

Step 4: Initial Setup Using DSM (DiskStation Manager)

  1. Install DSM (if not already installed):
    • When you first access the NAS, you may be prompted to install Synology DSM (DiskStation Manager).
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest version of DSM.
    • If you don’t see an automatic installation prompt, download DSM from the Synology website and upload it manually through the browser interface.
  2. Create an Admin Account:
    • During the setup, you’ll be asked to create an administrator account. Choose a username and a strong password.
    • You will also set the name of your NAS.
  3. Select Network Configuration:
    • You will be asked to configure your network settings.
    • By default, the NAS will use DHCP (get an IP address automatically). If you want a static IP address, you can configure it here by entering the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS servers manually.
  4. Set Up Time Zone:
    • Choose the correct time zone based on your location to ensure proper time synchronization.
  5. Complete Setup:
    • Follow through the remaining prompts, including updating DSM to the latest version if needed.
    • Once the installation is complete, you will be directed to the DSM desktop.

From DSM desktop you will be able to further manage and configure your NAS as per your requirements.
