RDNA 4 is AMD’s latest gaming GPU architecture, driving the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT. It sets the stage for Neural Rendering to play a bigger role in gaming in the years ahead.
With 2nd Generation AI Accelerators supporting FP8, RDNA 4 delivers twice the AI performance of its predecessor. This enables AMD’s new custom Super Resolution model for FSR 4, which—unlike earlier versions—is exclusive to RDNA 4. By utilizing advanced AI hardware, FSR 4 significantly enhances image quality compared to the non-AI-based FSR 3.1, marking a major step toward competing with NVIDIA DLSS.
For those looking beyond ray tracing, RDNA 4 brings major architectural upgrades, including a 3rd Gen Infinity Cache, enhanced scalar units, dynamic register allocation, improved efficiency, and higher clock speeds than RDNA 3.
A key addition is new shader reordering, similar to NVIDIA’s Shader Execution Reordering (SER) in the RTX 40 Series. This optimizes memory management by allowing shader tasks to be executed more efficiently rather than in a fixed sequence. AMD states that this will enhance RDNA 4’s performance across various workloads, not just ray tracing.
The Radeon RX 9070 XT flagship features a monolithic design built on TSMC’s 4nm process, packing 53.9 billion transistors on a 356.5 mm² die. This puts it in the same league as NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5080, which has a 378 mm² die and 45.6 billion transistors.
AMD is making major upgrades to the Radeon Media Engine, delivering 20-25% better video quality, more efficient playback, and enhanced encoding and decoding hardware. This is a big win for content creators, as RDNA 4 significantly improves over RDNA 3, with AMD ensuring these enhancements will be noticeable right away in OBS for streaming and recording.
The AMD Radiance Display Engine also gets a boost, featuring DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1b support. This enables 4K 12-bit HDR at 480Hz and 8K 12-bit HDR at 165Hz, ensuring top-tier display performance for high-resolution gaming and professional workflows.
RDNA 4 marks a major leap forward for AMD’s GPU architecture, delivering enhanced AI capabilities, improved ray tracing, better memory management, and higher efficiency across the board. With FSR 4 leveraging AI hardware, 3rd Gen Raytracing Accelerators, and new shader reordering, RDNA 4 is designed to compete more aggressively with NVIDIA’s latest offerings.
For gamers, this means better performance and visuals, while content creators benefit from superior media encoding, decoding, and display support. The Radeon RX 9070 XT and its monolithic 4nm design demonstrate AMD’s commitment to pushing innovation.
