How to back up Windows 11 properly
Windows provides integrated backup capabilities that can protect supported files, settings and other information through Microsoft’s ecosystem. This is convenient, especially when moving to another Windows PC.But a complete data-protection strategy should not depend on a single mechanism.
A useful traditional backup guideline is:
3 copies of your data
2 different types of storage
1 copy off-site
For example:
- working files on your PC
- backup on an external drive or NAS
- another copy in cloud storage.
The exact implementation can vary, but redundancy is the important part.
Cloud Backup
Cloud storage protects against many local disasters, including theft and physical drive failure. However, understand the difference between synchronization and independent backups. If deletion or corruption synchronizes to every device, recovery depends on the provider’s versioning and retention capabilities.
External Drives
External SSDs and hard drives remain useful for large backups. A backup drive does not necessarily need to remain connected permanently. Keeping a backup offline can provide additional protection from certain ransomware scenarios.
Think about information that is difficult to recreate:
- photographs
- browser data
- password-manager recovery information
- configuration files
- SSH keys
- application projects
- business documents
- virtual machines.
Test your Backup
A backup is useful only if you can restore from it.Periodically select several files and verify that recovery works. For business systems, restore testing should be a formal process.
Backup strategy is not about choosing between OneDrive and an external disk.It is about eliminating single points of failure. If the only copy of an important file exists on one SSD, that file should be considered at risk.
