Situatie
YARA is commonly used to identify suspicious files based on strings, patterns, and other characteristics. Writing rules manually can be confusing when you’re not familiar with the syntax.
Solutie
Step 1 – Define what you want to detect
Start with a simple description of the pattern you’re looking for. For example, imagine you’re investigating files from a controlled malware-analysis lab and you’ve identified these test strings:
LAB_TEST_MARKER
example-command
training-sample
You want a YARA rule that identifies files containing at least two of these strings.
Step 2 – Ask AI to Generate the Rule
Give the AI the indicators and explain the detection logic you want.
Create a YARA rule for a malware-analysis lab.
The rule should:
- Look for these strings:
- "LAB_TEST_MARKER"
- "example-command"
- "training-sample"
- Trigger when at least two strings are present.
- Use readable variable names.
- Include comments explaining the rule.
AI can then generate a rule similar to:
rule Lab_Test_Sample
{
strings:
$marker = "LAB_TEST_MARKER"
$command = "example-command"
$training = "training-sample"
condition:
2 of them
}
Step 3 – Ask AI to Explain It
Don’t blindly copy the generated rule.
Ask:
Explain this YARA rule line by line.
Also explain exactly when the condition will trigger.
This is useful when you’re learning YARA because you can understand the syntax instead of simply generating rules you don’t understand.
Step 4 – Test the Rule
Save the rule as:
lab_test.yar
Then test it against files in your analysis environment:
yara lab_test.yar sample.bin
You can also ask AI to help troubleshoot syntax errors or improve the detection logic.
AI is especially useful when you already know what you’re looking for, but aren’t confident about YARA syntax.
A good workflow is:
Investigation → Identify indicators → AI generates rule → Review → Test → Tune
The important part is the review and testing. AI-generated detection rules can contain mistakes or produce false positives, so always validate them against known test samples before deploying them in a real environment.
