Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is a Layer 2 network protocol developed by Cisco that allows Cisco devices to discover and share information with each other within the same local area network (LAN). CDP enables devices to communicate essential information about themselves, including:
- Device type and model
- IP address
- Software version
- Port configuration capabilities
How CDP Works
CDP periodically sends messages (packets) to devices in the network, which other CDP-enabled devices receive and analyze. This allows each device to learn details about its neighbors, such as device identity, capabilities, and network layer addresses.
CDP is particularly useful for network administrators as it helps them map the network topology and monitor device status. However, it can present security risks if enabled on interfaces that connect to untrusted networks, as unauthorized users may exploit CDP to gather sensitive network information.
