How To Stop CHKDSK in Progress Windows 10

Rezolvare problema (Fix IT)

Situatie

CHKDSK is a Windows system tool that scans the file system integrity of a volume and fixes any errors found. There are cases when you start your computer you will notice CHKDSK running even if you did not run it. This is no cause for alarm as your system probably just triggered this action to run on the next reboot. Some of the reasons why this is running is due to improper shutdowns, malware infection, file system errors, and failing hard drives.

If CHKDSK is running during the startup of your computer and you can’t wait for it to finish then you can easily stop its progress by following the steps listed below.

Solutie

You can cancel CHKDSK by clicking on the Cancel icon (x) on the pop-up. This will stop the scan from running. You can also force a shutdown on your computer to stop CHKDSK from running.

It is however advisable that you let the CHKDSK finish its operation so that any system errors can be fixed.

If CHKDSK keeps on running during startup then you can stop it permanently using the Registry Editor.

  • Run regedit to open the Registry Editor
  • Go to  the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
  • Change the BootExecute entry from autocheck autochk * /r\DosDevice\C: to autocheck autochk *
  • Close the registry editor then restart your computer

You can also use the Command Prompt to cancel a scheduled check disk. Type the following in the Command Prompt  “chkntfs /x c: “ then hit enter. Here, c is the drive letter that is scheduled to run a CHKDSK.
