uBlock Origin works by using filter lists—sets of rules that tell it which elements (ads, trackers, scripts) to block on a webpage. It can:
- Block ads (banners, pop-ups, video ads, and more).
- Prevent tracking by blocking third-party cookies and scripts.
- Speed up browsing by reducing the number of elements that load.
- Enhance security by blocking known malicious sites and phishing attempts.
By default, uBO uses well-known filter lists, but you can customize it to block even more or whitelist sites where you want ads to appear.
Why Use uBlock Origin Instead of Other Ad Blockers?
💡 Open-source & Transparent → No shady business; it’s maintained by a community.
🚀 Lightweight → Uses less memory and CPU than competitors like AdBlock Plus.
❌ No “Acceptable Ads” → It blocks all ads unless you allow them.
⚡ Advanced Customization → You can create your own rules for blocking content.
🛡️ Privacy-focused → It prevents fingerprinting and data tracking.
Unlike some ad blockers that partner with advertisers to allow “non-intrusive” ads (like AdBlock Plus), uBlock Origin blocks everything unless you explicitly whitelist something.
1️⃣ Easy Mode (Default) – “Set It & Forget It”
- Just install it, and it will block ads & trackers automatically
- Uses EasyList, EasyPrivacy, and uBO filters (default filter lists)
- You can pause it or whitelist websites if needed.
2️⃣ Medium Mode – More Control
- Blocks third-party scripts & frames (often used for tracking)
- Can break some websites but improves privacy.
3️⃣ Hard Mode – Maximum Protection
- Blocks ALL scripts by default (even first-party scripts)
- Requires manual tweaking but offers the best privacy & security.
🔧 To Access Settings:
- Click the uBlock Origin icon in your browser.
- Click the Dashboard (⚙️ icon).
- Adjust settings under the Filter Lists, My Rules, and My Filters tabs.
🔹 Advanced Features

How to Install uBlock Origin

Potential Downsides
🔴 May Break Some Websites → Some sites rely on third-party scripts, so they might not work properly unless you whitelist them.
🔴 Requires Manual Tweaks for Advanced Users → If you use Medium or Hard mode, some sites may require exceptions.
🔴 Not Available on iOS Safari → Apple removed it from the App Store, but alternatives exist (like AdGuard).
