Situatie
Microsoft Teams is a unified communications platform that combines real-time chat, video conferencing, file sharing, and task management. It was designed to improve collaboration within organizations and is now being used as a replacement for Zoom and Discord by many users.
In Teams, hyperlinks can be added to chat messages and conversations. To add a hyperlink to a chat message, simply type or paste the URL into the message box. The link will automatically be displayed as clickable text.
The first thing you need to do when troubleshooting is to identify where the problem is occurring.
- If the hyperlink is not working when you click on it in the chat window, the issue is most likely with your internet connection.
- If the problem occurs when you click on a hyperlink in a document or website that’s been shared in Microsoft Teams, then the issue is most likely with how the link has been formatted.
- If the link opens a webpage but doesn’t load any content, the page itself may be no longer available.
- If your browser is outdated, it may cause some problems that lead to hyperlinks not working.
- Teams may block the link from opening if your permissions and authorizations are not set up correctly.
- If the link is flagged as suspicious or dangerous, Teams will most likely attempt to protect your computer by blocking the link.

Restart the Microsoft Teams App
- Close all open Microsoft Teams windows and applications on your computer, and then right-click on an empty space in your taskbar and choose Task Manager.
- Locate the Microsoft Teams application in the Processes or Details tab of the Task Manager. Once you have it, click on it once and click the End Task button.
- Wait until the Teams process quits entirely, and relaunch the application.
Clear Your Browser Cache
- Click on the More icon (the three dots placed vertically next to your Chrome user icon), and then hover over More tools. Select Clear browsing data from the drop-down menu.
- Make sure the time range is set to All time.
- Enable all of the following options:
- Browsing history
- Cookies and other site data
- Cached images and files
- Click on the Clear data button. After the process is over, restart Google Chrome and check if this helped you resolve the problem.
Log In and Out of Your Microsoft Teams Account
If the problem is related to your account, you may be able to fix it by logging out and then logging back in. This will refresh your account and may clear any problems causing the hyperlinks not to work.
- Launch Microsoft Teams and click on your user avatar in the window’s top right corner.
- Click on the Sign out option from the context menu. This is going to log you out of your current Teams account
- After signing out, enter your account credentials and sign back into Microsoft Teams. When you’re done, test if you can open hyperlinks properly.
Clear the Microsoft Teams Cache
If the problem is with the Teams app, then the issue may be related to the cache. The Teams cache stores data so that it can be accessed more quickly. The data in the cache can become old and irrelevant over time, similar to how web browsers fill up with outdated information and start causing issues.
- Exit out of Microsoft Teams entirely. Follow the steps in Method 1 to learn how to close the application completely.
- Press Windows + R keys to bring up the Run dialog box. To open the correct folder in your File Explorer, type ‘%AppData%\Microsoft\teams‘ and press Enter.
- Press the Ctrl + A keyboard shortcut to select all the folders and files in this directory. Alternatively, you can click and drag with your mouse or select all folders and files one by one.
- Press the Del button on your keyboard, or right-click on any of the selected items and choose Delete from the context menu.
- Launch Microsoft Teams and see if your hyperlinks are working.
Switch to the Microsoft Teams Web App
If the problem is with the Teams app, you may be able to fix it by switching to the web version of Teams. You can use Teams in any browser of your choice by opening the microsoft.com/en-ww/microsoft-teams/log-in link in your browser.
Update Microsoft Teams
- Launch the Microsoft Teams app and make sure you’re logged into your account.
- Click on the three dots next to your profile picture in the app’s top right corner, and then select Check for updates from the context menu.
- Wait for Teams to find a new update. If an update is released and available on your device, download and install it.
Suppose your hyperlinks aren’t working in Microsoft Teams. In that case, you can try a few things to fix the problem—including restarting Microsoft Teams, checking your browser settings, clearing your cache and cookies, updating Microsoft Teams, or reaching out to customer support for assistance. Hopefully, one of these solutions will work for you!
