How to fully deactivate Cortana on Windows 11

Situatie

If you simply want Cortana to stop running in the background and launching at startup — without touching deep system settings or uninstalling anything — this method is the safest choice. It uses only built-in Windows 11 settings and Task Manager, so you can easily reverse the changes later.

Solutie

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps
  2. In the search box type Cortana and click the three-dot menu (…) next to it → Advanced options
  3. Under Runs at log-in toggle Off
  4. In the same page, under Background apps permissions, choose Never (if available)
  5. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → Startup tab → if Cortana appears, right-click → Disable
  6. Restart the PC.
