A compromised PC can therefore become a serious problem. Here are ten security checks every Windows user should perform in 2026.
1. Install the Latest Windows Updates
The first step is simple: keep Windows updated. Microsoft regularly releases security updates to address vulnerabilities and improve system reliability. The August 2026 security updates are a good reminder that delaying updates indefinitely is not a good security strategy.
2. Check Microsoft Defender
Open Windows Security and verify that your antivirus protection is active. Make sure real-time protection is enabled and investigate any warnings shown by Windows Security.
3. Use Strong, unique Passwords
Never reuse the same password across multiple important accounts. If one service is compromised, reused passwords can allow attackers to access other accounts. A password manager can make unique passwords considerably easier to manage.
4. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication
Whenever possible, enable multi-factor authentication. Even if someone obtains your password, an additional authentication factor can make unauthorized access significantly more difficult. Prioritize email, banking, cloud storage and social media accounts.
5. Remove Software you don’t use
6. Review Browser extensions
Browser extensions can have access to significant amounts of information. Remove extensions you no longer use and avoid installing extensions from unknown developers.
7. Check your downloads Folder
The Downloads folder is often forgotten. Remove old installers and files you no longer need, particularly files received from unknown sources. If a file looks suspicious, do not open it simply to see what it contains.
8. Review Account Permissions
Check which applications and services have access to your Microsoft account, Google account and other important online accounts. Remove access for services you no longer use.
9. Back Up important Data
A backup can protect you from hardware failure, accidental deletion and ransomware. Important files should not exist in only one location. For particularly valuable data, maintaining more than one backup is recommended.
10. Be careful with AI-Generated Content
AI has made it easier to create convincing emails, messages, images and websites. That means users need to be increasingly careful when clicking links or responding to unexpected requests. Do not assume that a message is legitimate simply because it looks professionally written.

But how autonomous are these systems really? What Is an AI Agent?A traditional chatbot generally waits for a question and produces an answer. An AI agent is designed to take a goal and perform multiple actions to achieve it. Depending on the system, an agent may be able to search information, interact with software, analyze files, write code or communicate with other services.
The important difference is that an agent can potentially decide what action to take next instead of requiring a human to provide every individual instruction.
The human still needs to define the objective and appropriate permissions, but much of the repetitive work can be automated.
More autonomy also means more risk.An AI agent with access to company systems effectively becomes another entity operating inside the organization. If it has excessive permissions, a mistake or compromised instruction could have consequences beyond a normal chatbot conversation. Researchers studying agent security have highlighted risks involving untrusted prompts, memory, tool interfaces, identity, delegation and supply-chain security.
Despite rapid progress, AI agents still have limitations. They can misunderstand instructions, make incorrect assumptions or fail when a task requires information that is unavailable.Recent research evaluating AI agents in incident-response scenarios found that current systems can identify some problems but still struggle with proactive investigation and complete remediation.
An AI agent can be extremely useful without being completely autonomous.Where Agents Make the Most SenseAI agents are particularly attractive for repetitive workflows.
Examples include:
In these areas, agents can reduce repetitive manual work while humans remain responsible for important decisions. Will AI Agents Replace Workers? That is unlikely to happen in the simple way many predictions suggest. A more realistic scenario is that workers will use AI agents as tools. One employee might supervise several automated workflows that previously required multiple people to perform manually. This could increase productivity, but it will also change the skills companies expect from employees.

Microsoft regularly changes Windows features, privacy controls and system behavior. Spending a few minutes reviewing your configuration can improve security, performance and everyday usability.
1. Review Windows Update Settings
Start with Windows Update.
Open Settings → Windows Update and make sure your computer is receiving security updates.
Avoid disabling Windows Update permanently. Security patches are one of the most important protections available to Windows users.
2. Check your Privacy Settings
Go to Settings → Privacy & security.
Review which applications have access to your location, microphone, camera and other sensitive information. Not every application needs permanent access to these features.
3. Disable Unnecessary Startup Apps
Too many applications launching with Windows can increase boot time and consume memory.
Open Settings → Apps → Startup and review the list.
Disable applications you do not need immediately after signing in.
4. Review Windows Security
Open Windows Security and check the status of Microsoft Defender.
Make sure real-time protection and other important security features are enabled.
If you use third-party antivirus software, verify that your security configuration is working correctly rather than assuming that everything is protected automatically.
5. Enable Device Encryption when appropriate
If your Windows edition and hardware support device encryption or BitLocker, consider enabling it. Encryption helps protect your data if a laptop is lost or stolen. Before enabling encryption, make sure you understand where your recovery key is stored.
6. Check your Microsoft Account
Open Settings → Accounts.
Review the account currently connected to Windows and make sure the information is correct.
This is particularly important if you use OneDrive, Microsoft 365 or Windows backup features.
7. Review Notification Settings
Windows applications can generate a large number of notifications.
Go to Settings → System → Notifications and disable notifications from applications that do not need to interrupt you.
Reducing unnecessary notifications can make Windows feel considerably less distracting.
8. Check Storage
Open Settings → System → Storage. Windows provides information about temporary files, applications and other data consuming disk space. If your system drive is almost full, performance and update reliability can suffer.
9. Review Default Applications
Open Settings → Apps → Default apps. Check which applications Windows uses for your browser, PDF files, images, videos and other common file types. This is particularly useful after installing or updating major applications.
10. Review Backup Options
Finally, make sure important files are backed up. A Windows computer can be replaced. Important personal or business data may not be. Consider maintaining at least one additional copy of critical files on another storage device or a trusted cloud service.
[mai mult...]Artificial intelligence is becoming one of the most important technologies in cybersecurity. Security teams are using AI to analyze alerts, detect suspicious behavior and investigate incidents, while attackers are increasingly experimenting with AI to automate parts of their operations.
The result is a rapidly changing security landscape where both defenders and attackers can potentially move faster than before. Traditional security systems were designed around applications, servers, networks and users. AI introduces another layer. Companies are now deploying AI assistants and autonomous agents that can access documents, applications, APIs and internal systems. That creates new opportunities, but it also creates new security risks.
A 2026 Darktrace study found that 92% of surveyed security professionals were concerned about the impact of AI agents across the workforce.
Attackers Can Automate More Tasks
Cybercriminals have always relied on automation. AI can make some processes more flexible. Instead of using a fixed script for every situation, an AI-powered system can potentially analyze information, adapt its next step and generate new content based on what it encounters.
This does not mean that AI can magically hack any computer. Modern systems still have authentication mechanisms, security controls and other barriers. However, automation can lower the amount of manual work required for certain types of attacks.
Defenders Are Using AI Too. The story is not entirely negative. Security teams are also using AI to process enormous amounts of information. A modern security operation can generate thousands or millions of events. Human analysts cannot investigate every alert manually.
AI can help prioritize suspicious activity, summarize incidents and identify relationships between events that might otherwise be missed. The European Commission has also highlighted both the opportunities and risks of advanced AI in cybersecurity as part of its 2026 cybersecurity strategy.
Unlike traditional chatbots, agents can be designed to perform multiple steps, interact with tools and continue working toward a goal. That makes them potentially useful for security operations. For example, an agent could analyze an alert, collect additional information, compare activity with historical data and prepare a report for a security analyst.
But giving an AI system access to real infrastructure also introduces serious risks. Why Human Oversight Still Matters. AI systems can make mistakes. An automated security system that incorrectly identifies legitimate activity as malicious could disrupt an important business process. The opposite problem can be even worse: failing to recognize a genuine attack.
For this reason, organizations need appropriate permissions, monitoring and human oversight when deploying AI agents. Recent research has also emphasized that securing autonomous AI requires looking beyond individual actions and considering the entire sequence of actions performed by an agent.
AI will probably become a standard component of cybersecurity rather than a separate technology.Security professionals will increasingly need to understand both traditional security concepts and AI-specific risks. The organizations that benefit most will likely be those that use AI to improve human decision-making rather than simply giving autonomous systems unlimited access.
[mai mult...]Microsoft has released its August 2026 security updates for Windows 11, bringing security fixes alongside a number of smaller but useful improvements to the operating system. The latest updates began rolling out on August 11, 2026, as part of Microsoft’s regular Patch Tuesday schedule. Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 users receive KB5121003, while Windows 11 26H1 receives KB5121000.
The August release focuses primarily on security and reliability, but users can also notice several changes across the Windows 11 experience. Microsoft continues to refine areas such as File Explorer, accessibility, Windows Hello and the overall user interface.
One of the more noticeable changes is improved support for biometric authentication. Compatible systems can benefit from additional options for signing in with external fingerprint devices.
Windows Hello continues to receive improvements designed to make biometric authentication more reliable and convenient on compatible hardware. For businesses, keeping Windows systems updated is especially important because security updates help reduce the window of opportunity for attackers attempting to exploit known vulnerabilities.
These features are becoming increasingly important as Microsoft attempts to make Windows usable for a wider range of users.
For most users, the answer is yes. Security updates should generally be installed as soon as practical, particularly on computers connected to the internet. Before installing a major cumulative update, however, users with critical workstations should make sure important files are backed up and that essential applications are functioning correctly.
How to Check for the Update
You can manually check for the latest Windows 11 updates by opening:
Windows may also install the update automatically depending on your update settings.
