Situatie
Hybrid cloud architecture allows organizations to integrate on-premises infrastructure with public cloud services while retaining control over selected workloads and operational dependencies.
However, extending enterprise networks into cloud environments introduces design challenges involving routing, address allocation, name resolution, identity, security policies, and connectivity resilience.Reliable hybrid connectivity requires treating cloud infrastructure as an extension of enterprise network architecture rather than an isolated collection of virtual machines.
IP Address Planning
Overlapping address spaces are a frequent source of complexity in hybrid environments. If an on-premises network and an Azure virtual network use overlapping IP ranges, direct routing becomes difficult and may require additional translation or redesign.
Address allocation should be planned before deploying production workloads.Organizations should reserve appropriate ranges for future virtual networks, application environments, and regional expansion.
Site-to-Site VPN Connectivity
Site-to-site VPN connections provide encrypted communication between compatible on-premises VPN devices and Azure network infrastructure.
- IPsec/IKE configurations must align across participating devices.
- Network engineers should validate encryption settings, tunnel stability, route advertisement, and failover behavior.
- VPN availability also depends on the supporting internet connections and local edge infrastructure.
ExpressRoute Architecture
Azure ExpressRoute enables private connectivity between enterprise networks and Microsoft’s cloud network through supported connectivity providers. It can offer predictable network characteristics and avoid using the public internet as the underlying connectivity path for supported traffic.
However, ExpressRoute does not automatically encrypt all traffic. Application-layer encryption or additional transport protection may still be required according to security requirements.
Routing and DNS Dependencies
Hybrid environments frequently depend on consistent routing and name resolution. Incorrect route propagation, asymmetric routing, or firewall policies may cause intermittent application connectivity. DNS architecture must account for private endpoints, internal namespaces, conditional forwarding, and the location of authoritative services.
Troubleshooting should distinguish DNS failures from actual network reachability problems.
Designing for Resilience
A single VPN tunnel or connectivity provider may represent an unacceptable availability risk for business-critical workloads.Organizations should evaluate redundant gateways, diverse connectivity paths, regional dependencies, and failover behavior.Resilience testing should include realistic interruption scenarios rather than relying solely on configuration reviews.
