Slow Wi-Fi? 10 ways to improve your Internet speed

Situatie

Slow Wi-Fi is often blamed on the internet provider, but the connection entering your home is only one part of the network. Wireless interference, poor router placement, congestion and weak signal strength can turn a fast internet connection into a frustrating experience.

1. Test With Ethernet first

Before changing Wi-Fi settings, determine whether Wi-Fi is actually the problem.Connect a computer directly to the router using Ethernet and perform several speed tests. If Ethernet is fast but Wi-Fi is slow, focus on the wireless network. If both are slow, investigate the ISP connection, router or modem.

2. Move the router

Router placement has an enormous effect on coverage.Avoid placing a wireless router:

  • inside cabinets
  • behind televisions
  • on the floor
  • next to large metal objects
  • in a corner of the property.

A central, elevated and relatively open position is usually better.

3. Choose the correct frequency band

Modern routers commonly provide 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connectivity, while newer equipment can also support 6 GHz.2.4 GHz generally provides greater range but has less spectrum and more interference.5 GHz typically offers higher performance at shorter distances.6 GHz can provide excellent performance with compatible hardware but has different range characteristics and requires supported devices.

4. Check Signal Strength

A fast router cannot overcome extremely poor signal conditions.Test performance near the access point and then repeat the test where you normally use the device.A dramatic difference indicates a coverage problem.

5. Check Channel congestion

In apartments and dense neighborhoods, dozens of wireless networks may compete for spectrum.Modern routers often select channels automatically, but automatic selection isn’t always optimal.A Wi-Fi analyzer can help identify congestion.

6. Update Router Firmware

Router manufacturers periodically release firmware updates containing bug fixes and security improvements.Check the administration interface or vendor application for available updates.

7. Remove Legacy Bottlenecks

An old router can become the limiting factor even when your ISP connection is fast.Likewise, an old laptop may support much slower Wi-Fi standards than the router.Performance depends on both ends of the connection.

8. Check who is using the Network

Cloud backups, game downloads, streaming and operating-system updates can consume substantial bandwidth.Check the router’s connected-device list when the connection unexpectedly slows down.Unknown devices should be investigated immediately.

9. Consider additional access Points or Mesh Wi-Fi

Large houses and buildings with reinforced walls may simply be too difficult for one access point to cover.A properly designed mesh system or wired additional access point can be far more effective than trying to increase transmit power.

10. Don’t Ignore Ethernet

Wi-Fi is convenient, but Ethernet remains an excellent choice for stationary devices.Gaming PCs, desktop workstations, NAS devices and smart TVs can benefit from wired connections while simultaneously reducing wireless congestion.
