Network OS installation problem – clock resynchronization with accuracy to the second (x64)

Configurare noua (How To)

Situatie

When trying to install an operating system using network boot, we can see that it does not start – one of the possible reasons may be the time (or more precisely, the minute and second) set on the problematic station. In this case, automatic or manual synchronization is ordered so that the network systems can successfully connect to the OS installation server.

Solutie

To fix this, we propose several methods, as follows:

a) installing a Windows with access to an administrator user on a storage medium, and inserting it into the station or laptop with problems – after that we can open a cmd as admin and run the following:

if we have domain credentials (and network access)

net time

the result will give us the address of a server with which we can perform the resynchronization

net time SERVERADDRESS /set /y

if this cannot be successfully achieved, we will run the command (example for 15:30:30)

time 15:30:30

We will press enter at the same time that the respective time is reached (arbitrary choice), taking as a reference another device with a freshly synchronized time – gaps of seconds or even a minute can be observed within a month.

b) if booting via USB is allowed, installing a windows 10 or 11 using the media creation tool, we will boot from it, click Next, Repair, and access the cmd tool, where we will also use the time command (net time being unavailable)

c) if we already have a windows on the station with problems, we can try to make a connection to the internal/domain network (wired or wireless), and follow the steps from point A, more precisely the command:

net time … /set /y

In certain situations we can access the BIOS/UEFI setup menu but it may be password protected or the manufacturer may not offer the possibility of changing the second, directly or indirectly. However, we have one last method available to us by which we can indirectly try to change the time at the second level, later configuring the hour and minute in the BIOS:

  • Turn off the workstation or laptop, disconnect all cables except the power one
  • Hold down the power button for 60 seconds
  • Check in the BIOS if we managed to delay the time/clock
  • If not, try again with the power disconnected.
